The Art of Living Foundation is thrilled to participate in the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations on June 21, 2026. For over 45 years, the Art of Living and its founder, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, have been instrumental in promoting Yoga globally, significantly contributing to the UN's declaration of the IDY in 2014. HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA

AOLF hosted a conference, “Yoga: A Science for World Peace” on December 4-5, 2011 attended by all the Yoga Gurus from around the world. The outcome of that conference was a resolution requesting the United Nation to declare the day of summer solstice, June 21st, as the International Day of Yoga.

Gurudev tweeted on December 6, 2011 amplifying this request and stating, “There is a World Toilet Day, but no World Yoga Day. We will write to the UN to recognize June 21 as World Yoga Day”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of UN General assembly first proposed the draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga on behalf of India with the endorsement of a record 175 member states. Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131.
